Workshop Descriptions
Triangulation: Natural Genius
Frey Faust
Nature's habit of using triangulated collagen fibers as the foundational building block for molecular construction is reflected in the macro-structures of the human body as well. Everywhere we look we see asymmetrical, torsional triangles, and the movements our joints and ligaments suggest are extensions of the paradigm. This observation provides the strongest argument for poly-axial motion as the basic diet for the training and preparation of anyone who plans to move.
In this session, I will share perception and observation of this geometrical phenomenon in some anatomical structures, using anatomical images as my reference, and lead you in some direct applications of the observations for joyful moving.
Time Curves
Negotiations between internal and external rhythms – Collectivity
Francesca Pedullà
The alchemy between rhythm and the moving body played and plays a fundamental role for all human beings all over the world, channeling individual and collective dynamics. The intimacy with rhythm can assist in the gathering of skill and awareness, as well as engender and enhance creativity, suggesting accent, quality, muscular tone, acceleration/deceleration, delay and expressive articulation.
During the workshop we will use the anatomical and bio-mechanical tools offered by the Axis Syllabus as well as some basic rhythmical principles to find strategies to negotiate between our own inner rhythm and collective shared rhythms. We will work with both theoretical and practical stimuli, do and observe individual and group improvisations, and of course we will dance together!
Rooting into Past – Future
Frey Faust
The fact is, we string ideas and concepts along in a linear chain as we read or speak. This means that our understanding is shaped by an arbitrary hierarchy in the order of appearance, rather than what might be causal or pertinent to the quality or function of an action. This is true even when we describe events that are happening simultaneously. There are of course definite uses for this attribute, but it also imposes a fundamental, incontrovertible limit.
In this session I will introduce a basic working set from the symbolic language I have been developing over the past 20 years, the Human Movement Alphabet, which has evolved into an economical way to capture or express complex processes or simultaneous events in a single character. The HMA character or symbol represents a nexus point that allows me to consider multiple departure points for arriving there, and multiple destinations or outcomes. I have found the HMA to be useful in dissolving the arbitrary value-attribution problem inherent in the verbal languages. In this session, I would like to avoid using the spoken language as much as possible, instead relying on sign, symbol and gesture to convey, outline, evaluate, practice and invent.
Tuning: Relational Ecology
Exploratory platform for discovering adaptive strategies for relating
Frey Faust & Francesca Pedullà
The complexity of the body in motion and its sensitive, dynamic architecture provide a field of stimulating research that generates questions and insights. We explore:
How do we adapt to internal and external conditions?
How does individual morphology influence our experience?
How do we share the moment?
How do we share space?
How do we enjoy dancing for ourselves as we dance together?
